Tipperary asks - ‘Who do you think you are?’
As part of the Gathering 2013, Tipperary Excel Arts & Cultural Centre has extended an invite to the ‘Excel Heritage & Genealogy weekend’ from March 15 to 17.
With lots of events and activities to participate in, including the St. Patrick’s Day parade, the Excel warmly welcome the generations of Tipperary diaspora back to Co. Tipperary.
“The Tipperary Excel Arts & Cultural Centre Excel is the only place to research your family heritage from the records of the Catholic Church for the Archdiocese of Cashel & Emly,” said Mary Sarsfield, Manager.
“This is a great opportunity for the diaspora to trace their roots while visiting Ireland and to get to know the people and the places of their heritage.”
For the Gathering Weekend, the Excel will run genealogy workshops that will give an overview of where to start researching and the process involved as well as a guided tour around the heritage sites in Tipperary Town. The Genealogy Unit will be open for anyone that would like to get started during the weekend.
The Excel is also holding a Theatre event, ‘The Great Hunger’ by Patrick Kavanagh, covering the reasons of course for mass emigration from Ireland in the 19th Century. This will be an opportunity to immerse oneself in Irish literature and an after dinner speaker on, ‘The History of Tipperary’ on Saturday evening, along with some traditional music and dance, will add to the entertainment.
To finish the weekend, the Excel will arrange for participants to take part in the St. Patrick’s Day parade on Sunday in Tipperary Town.
“Everyone from all over the world is welcome to participate in all or some of the activities and we are looking forward to meeting people from near and far for our gathering weekend,” said Mary Sarsfield. “We hope you will decide to join us for part of what promises to be a most memorable year in Ireland.”
