Tipperary library talk on theft of sacred relics

The theft of the relic of the True Cross from Holycross Abbey caused consternation far and wide. But stealing sacred relics is not a new phenomenon.

This is the fascinating topic for November’s lecture in the Tipperary Libraries Tipperary People and Places Lecture Series in The Source, Cathedral Street, Thurles on Tuesday, November 20 at 7.30 pm.

The speaker is Salvador Ryan, Professor of Ecclesiastical History at St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, author of several works on the history of Christianity and Devotion.

Salvador explains - “There is, in fact, a long history of the appropriation of sacred relics for all manner of uses since Christianity’s earliest day”.

His talk explores the evolution of sacred relics in Christian history and explains why individuals felt tempted to steal them for their own purposes. Along the way, we will encounter some remarkable individuals and cults and learn how these sacred items could inspire the most profound faith in some and the most terrible violence in others.

Join us in The Source on November 20th for a fascinating look into the world of Sacred Relics and their widespread appeal. All are welcome. For further information contact (0504) 29278 or studies@tipperarylibraries.ie
