Tipperary teens launch new website

Over the past few months a group of teenagers from Tipperary town were working on a website project in the board room of Tipperary Regional Youth Service.This group had decided to look at the information needs of young people and how the access to info could be improved. The idea came about after the group were recruited last summer as a youth advisory group to be involved in the planning for updating the front office to make it more youth friendly. Once the idea was born the group in consultation with the co-ordinator decided to apply for EU funding through the Youth in Action programme so they applied and were awarded a Youth Initiative project from the National agency Leargas.
The project involved planning from the idea stage to the end product, research of the needs following a research skills workshop, designing a survey, compiling the data and then with the help of a graphic designer making a youth friendly website, once all the work was completed, the group had to organise a launch event. All during the project the group also reflected on their own learning with the coach in order to be able to complete the Youthpass certificate which recognises the learning while on EU projects.

The group finally launched their work in Tipperary Regional Youth Service Information office last Friday evening with a large group of their peers, Mayor of Tipperary Ruairi Devitt launched the site and complimented the teens on doing such a great project, he was really impressed with the Youth Pass and the fact that this type of project can be certificated and told the youth how valuable such a certificate will be in their future employment.He also complemented the youth service on giving young people opportunities for such projects which have huge personal learning and life skills. Dermot Riordan, Chairman of TRYS said youth participation is a key element of the work of TRYS and youth having opportunities to learn in new ways and develop as individuals by involvement is an intended outcome of the work of the youth service. He also congratulated the group and was delighted to hear they intend to stay involved and find new areas to work on.
The new website is live and will continue to be updated by the group who are staying involed and also now going to attend the Young Voices consultation is Cork on 2nd February to be part of the Structured Dialogue on Europe which is happening as part of the EU presidency.. It’s hoped that using the web and social media young people can access the relevant information they need.
