Tipperary achievements showcased at national conference
Tipperary's achievements in local government were showcased at the weekend, when 200 councillors from all over Ireland gathered at Ballykisteen House Hotel for their annual conference.
The major event was organised by local councillor Michael Fitzgerald from Golden, who is President of the National Association of County & City Councils (ACCC).
Cllr. Fitzgerald said he was delighted to bring the national conference of the councillors' association to South Tipperary, as the area had such a lot to offer.
He said: "Delegates were impressed with the co-operation between South Tipperary County Council and local development groups across a wide range of projects.'
The theme of the conference was 'Rebuilding confidence in urban and rural communities'. Among theTipperary based examples on this theme was the success of Emly, the national Tidy Towns winner. The mobilisation of community effort to achieve the national title was outlined to delegates by Sharon Cunningham, a staff member of South Tipp County Council who is also chairperson of Emly Tidy Towns committee.
The theme of community support was taken up in a presentation to councillors by Martin Quinn, the Tipperary-based national President of Muintir na Tre.
With last November's flood disasters still fresh in the minds of councillors from many parts of Ireland, there was strong interest in a presentation by local authority executives from South Tipperary.
The excellent presentation on the successful flood protection and warning scheme put into operation in Clonmel, during flooding threats from the River Suir, was delivered by Clonmel Town Clerk Billy Doyle and Billy McEvoy, Director of Roads with South Tipperary County Council.
Cllr. Fitzgerald commented: "I think councillors were impressed to see a local authority operation producing results in the very difficult project of flood control. I think many of them will be bringing the example of Clonmel back to their own counties."
Tipperary's leadership figures on an international stage were personified by Ballydoyle trainer Aiden O'Brien, who fielded questions from a packed conference hall on how to motivate teamwork to achieve success in the demanding bloodstock sector.
The conference was also addressed by South Tipperary County Council chairman Liam Ahearn, who made a presentation to Cllr. Fitzgerald in recognition of his role in bringing the prestigious national event to South Tipperary.
