Tradition of Bank Holiday Monday Mass at the Cross is still going strong
Early morning drizzle didn't deter a few hundred people from making the pilgrimage to the Holy Year Cross on the foothills of the Comeraghs, overlooking Clonmel, for the annual Mass on the August Bank Holiday Monday.
One of the largest congregations in years made their way to the hilltop cross at Lahairce for the Mass, which was celebrated by Canon Nicholas Power, Ss Peter and Paul's.
Fortunately, the weather remained fine for the Mass, which attracted young and old alike. From early morning a steady stream of pilgrims began to wind their way through the Old Bridge and up the hill in good time for the 11 o'clock ceremony.
Canon Power said he was pleased to see the tradition being continued and he described the Mass as a great way of connecting with the past and each other.
He predicted that next year's celebration, which will be the 60th anniversary of the annual Mass at the Cross, would be a special occasion.
He reminded the congregation that next year would also mark a significant milestone for Ss Peter and Paul's parish, which will celebrate its 200th anniversary with a series of commemorative events throughout the year.
Canon Power remembered in the prayers those who attended in previous years and who were either no longer with us or unable to attend this year.
The congregation included several members of Clonmel Borough Council who were led by Deputy Mayor Joe Leahy. The readings were recited by Cllr. Leahy and Cllr. Seamus Healy.
Patsy Lambe of the organising committee thanked all those who contributed to the success of the occasion.
