Two charged with IRA membership following Cahir arrests

Two men appeared before a sitting of the Special Criminal Court last Saturday evening charged with membership of the IRA following their arrest on the N24 at Cahir last Thursday.

Noel Noonan, aged 34, of North Claughan Rd., Garryowen, Limerick and Thomas McMahon, aged 31 of Ros Fearna, Murroe, Limerick were both charged before the court with membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hEireann and otherwise the IRA on February 7.

They were arrested on the N24 near Cahir last Thursday evening by members of the Special Detective Unit and other national and local garda units as part of an investigation into dissident republicans.

There was no application for bail but defence counsel for both parties, Michael Bowman BL, said it was anticipated such an application would be made at the next hearing of the case.

Both men were remanded in custody to appear before the court again this Friday, February 15.

A third man arrested in the garda operation last Thursday was released last Saturday afternoon without charge and a file is to be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecution.
