The savage attack of a garda by five pitbull terriers when he called to a house in the Ballymacarbry area last week was accidental, according to a garda superintendent.

Gda. Donal Foley was discharged from South Tipperary Hospital last Thursday after undergoing surgery for the injuries he received in the attack that happened three days previously.

The Gardai and Waterford Co. Council Dog Warden are investigating the attack, which occurred shortly before 9pm on Monday, May 7.

Gda Foley was introducing himself to the occupants of the house he was calling to in the course of his duty when the pack of dogs came around the corner and pounced on him.

Supt. Michael Leacy of Dungarvan Garda Station said the incident was accidental and there was no suggestion that it was anything other than that.

He also said Gda. Foley was out of hospital and was making progress.

Supt. Leacy declined to disclose the area of Ballymacarbry where the attack took place and said it was too early in the investigation to say whether a prosecution would be taken against the owners.

Waterford Co. Council Dog Warden Oliver Walsh said they were piecing together all the facts and the matter was under investigation.
