Volunteers needed for youth mentoring scheme

Adult volunteers are being sought to become guiding mentors for young people in Carrick-on-Suir as part of a new youth scheme being set up in the town.

The Big Brother, Big Sister programme is being brought to Carrick-on-Suir by Carrick Neighbourhood Youth Project.

It is an internationally renowned mentoring scheme whereby volunteers form friendships with young people with the aim of positively influencing their development.

The programme runs in 37 countries worldwide and has been running in the United States for more than 100 years. In Ireland, BBBS is currently operating in Galway, Sligo, Roscommon, Mayo, Offaly, Westmeath, Dublin, Donegal, Kilkenny and Waterford.

Volunteers are being sought in the Carrick-on-Suir to become mentors.

Anne Howard, the local BBBS Project Officer, said volunteers can come from all walks in life and bring their interests and experience to the friendship.

"They are carefully screened and receive training before the friendship begins. They receive support and guidance from a staff member throughout the friendship," she said.

"Having a caring adult friend can help young people to develop a commitment to learning, a positive sense of self and the future, positive values of caring, social justice, honesty and responsibility; and social competencies of making friends, planning, making decisions and resisting negative behaviour.

Big Brother, Big Sister volunteers are asked to spend one to two hours a week with their ''little'' brother/sister.

The initial commitment is for one year. Together you can decide on the type of activities that you would like to do such as go for coffee, play football, do arts and crafts and play computer games.

''Its great fun, you'll do things you haven't done in years. It is an opportunity to develop a friendship with a young person, share common interests and try new things," said Anne Howard.
