Welcome for walking and cycling path - but lighting a priority in winter months
The lack of public lighting on a section of the N24 Clonmel bypass, which has undergone significant improvements to cater for walkers, joggers and cyclists, is causing concern for people worried about using the road for exercise during the dark winter months.
Following the recent installation of a dedicated walking and cycling path on the bypass, Cllr Siobhan Ambrose said at this month’s meeting of Clonmel Borough Council that she had been contacted by a number of women who were concerned about the lack of lighting to accompany the new works. A two kilometre stretch of road from the Cashel Road Roundabout to the Cahir Road Roundabout has undergone a facelift over the past few months following the installation of a dedicated cycle track and pedestrian corridor.
Along with savings of €95,000 achieved by South Tipperary County Council, funding of €456,000 was also secured under the Smarter Travel Policy last year, to provide this amenity along this stretch of road, already popular for walkers and runners.
It is part of the Council’s overall Walking and Cycling Strategy, which aims to get people out and about, promoting walking and cycling to work, school or for leisure.
When told that the initial funding did not stretch far enough to cater for lighting, Cllr Ambrose asked Clonmel Borough Council if further funding could be applied for to put appropriate lighting in place.
Speaking to The Nationalist, Clonmel Town Clerk Ger Walsh said that funding simply wasn’t available for the provision of public lighting but may be part of a future funding application.
He said that while it may be a drawback during the Winter months, it will be greatly used during the Summer when the evenings are brighter.
