When permission was needed to use a pedal cycle
Husband and wife team Tom and Maribel Wood who will be making a little bit of history by contesting the the upcoming Cashel Town Council and Tipperary South County Council elections.
With an increasing number of people embracing cycling and road surfaces often in a very poor state of repair, Cashel councillor Tom Wood, has called on council management to incorporate the necessary improvement works into their 2013 road maintenance budget.
“Daily, cyclists and pedestrians are encouraged to take to the roads, but, while trying to avoid uneven surfaces they are often forced onto the centre and are placed in serious danger of been involved in an accident,” he says.
Following recent representations relating to sections of the busy Dualla road, he was informed by the Area Engineer that unfortunately due to a lack of funding, the roads authority was unable to deal with the problem in the immediate term but would examine it when the 2013 programme was being drawn up.
In the past, Cllr Wood has requested that certain roads in close proximity to the town would be designated for cycling and walking with surfaces improved and road markings and signs installed and he believes that this may be an opportune time to revisit that proposal again.
Meanwhile, Mr. Maurice Thompson, Bohermore, Cashel, has furnished Tom Wood with a very interesting document dated June 23,1921 when Maurice’s late aunt received a certificate from The Barracks, Tipperary, and signed on behalf of the Officer Commanding Troops, permitting her to cycle to school in Cashel.
It reads: “Permission is hereby granted to Miss Eleanor J. Trayer, of Cashel, to use a Pedal Cycle in the inspectorate of Cashel for the sole purpose of proceeding to and from her home at Lyonstown to her studies at the Presentation Convent School, Cashel, by the recognised main direct route only.”
