Women’s refuge Cuan Saor benefits from Clonmel Lions Club funding donation

Fiona Rea, Clonmel Lions Club president presented a cheque for €400 to Breda Bell of the women’s refuge Cuan Saor in the newly decorated art therapy room of Cuan Saor.
The funds provided by the Lions Club financed a complete makeover of the art therapy room in the centre at Jervis Place, Parnell Street, as well as paying for some new toys for the children who use the room on a daily basis.
The work was carried out by a group of volunteers from Berlin who spent three weeks in Clonmel working under the expert eye of well-known artist John Donovan. The project was managed by Andy Griffin. Breda Bell and her staff expressed their gratitude to John and the students for all the hard work carried out during their sojourn in Clonmel.
The visit was organised by EIL (European Intercultural Learning), who arranged host families in the town for the students. They were in Clonmel as guests of Tipperary Volunteer Centre who co-ordinated the project from their centre in Cahir.
Hilary Tarrant, manager of Tipperary Volunteer Centre, also expressed her satisfaction at the quality of the work carried out by the student volunteers.
EIL, based in Cork, is an Irish not-for-profit organisation that promotes intercultural learning through a range of cultural, educational and volunteering activities. Students visit Clonmel twice a year and carry out social projects for various groups in the area.
While in Clonmel they visited local schools and spent a number of evenings in the Place2Bee youth centre as guests of the local youth club. Long distance friendships made possible by technology are flourishing as a result of their time in the town.
