Workman's Boat Club makes it a night to remember for Chernobyl children
The event hosted recently by the Workman's Boat Club for the visiting Chernobyl children was a great success and a night to remember.
The river was in good order and the recent heavy rain brought the levels up sufficiently for the boats to make good use of the great expanse of water upriver from the boat club.
The forecast was dire but as often happens someone was keeping an eye on the event and everyone enjoyed a lovely dry evening. The spins in the boats were the highlight of the activities and the kids had plenty of fun.
The speed boats were the main attraction and the big RIB was something else. There were three speed boats, an ocean-going RIB and all the club boats on the water in their many roles.
The owners and crews of the boats got into the swing of things quickly and as soon as the club members could get the kids into their life jackets the boats set off upriver to just below the bend before the Sandybanks weir for their trip.
The speed boats kept at it until fading light called a halt to the fun, with children and host families getting an introduction to life on the water.
It was not all about boats, however, as the Workman's Club had laid on a full schedule for all and DJ Billy Bop had set up in the new boat shed and discoed the night away with music for all tastes. Inside in the clubhouse there were all sorts of goodies for children and adults, from the welcome cup of tea to soft drinks and fast food. The volunteers kept up an endless supply of sausages, chips, cakes and treats, all of which were served with a smile.
No night can be a success without sponsors and thanks are extended to Hewitt's Bakery,Mitchel Street; Larissa's Bakery and Restaurant,Mitchel Street; O'Gorman's,Bakery and Restaurant, O' Connell Street; Superquinn and Abrakebabra,Gladstone Street.
Gratitude is also extended to all the magnificent boatmen for their unfailing good humour and to the man among them who, after work in Dublin, drove to Clonmel, then on to Youghal to pick up the boat and boatman before returning to Clonmel, and he was last to leave the river. Then it was on to Youghal to return the boat and boatman followed by a trip to Dublin for work the next morning...now wasn't that something. Grandfather Frank would be very proud of him. The Civil Defence came up trumps and had three boats fully crewed on the river, with a shore First Aid team as part of the safety back-up. The Clonmel Rowing Club gave permission to use their slipways to launch the speed boats and assisted in any way requested. Take a bow everyone for a job well done.
