Mixed ratings for Clonmel and Tipperary town in anti-litter league
Litter - still an unwelcome problem in South Tipperary
There were mixed fortunes for Clonmel and Tipperary town in the latest Anti Litter League survey by Irish Business Against Litter.
Clonmel, in 16th spot, is one of 18 towns rated ‘Cleaner than European Norms’.
Tipperary town, however, languishes towards the foot of the rankings in 40th position out of 42 surveyed, but is ‘moderately littered’.
The study, despite showing continuing improvement in the cleanliness of our cities and towns, revealed the environs of Dublin Airport to be a litter blackspot. Tourists landing at the Airport are being greeted by littered approach roads, leaving a negative first impression of the country, says IBAL.
Tipp town is just one place above the airport environs.
An Taisce says of Clonmel: “Another excellent result for Clonmel with eight out of the ten sites surveyed getting the top litter grade. What sets Clonmel and the other very high scoring towns apart is not just the lack of litter but the way in which the environment is presented and maintained. All four approach roads were top ranking and this created a very positive first impression of the town. Wolfe Tone Car Park was enhanced by some colourful planting and attractive brick work which took the away the ‘bare’ look.”
An Taisce says of Tipperary town: “Tipperary, along with three other towns, was categorised as ‘Littered’ in 2011 – all have improved.
“It has five top ranking sites but the presence of one litter blackspot and one seriously littered site brings down Tipperary’s overall ranking. The Excel Heritage/Arts Centre was well maintained and three of the four approach roads were in good order.
“By far the worst site in Tipperary was Gashouse Lane – it scored very badly due to the derelict site which has suffered long-term abuse and neglect.”
76% of the 42 towns and cities surveyed were deemed to be clean, a record percentage. Cavan was judged Ireland’s cleanest town, one of 18 to be rated ‘cleaner than European norms.’ An Taisce inspectors praised it as “a town that clearly takes great pride in its environment.”
