New home for Stroke Support Group
The Clonmel Stroke Support Group has a new home.
The group, in collaboration with the Irish Heart Foundation, was launched last September and its first meetings were held at Our Lady’s Hospital in Cashel.
Its first meeting at its new headquarters - the new community centre beside St. Oliver’s Church in Glenconnor, Clonmel - was held last night (Tuesday), and from now meetings will be held at 8pm on the first Tuesday of every month.
The voluntary group is the brainchild of Gemma Dunn and Sandra Hickey, two staff nurses at the South Tipperary General Hospital. It offers support, advice and direction to patients, their families and the carers of stroke victims.
The group aims to help those stroke victims who feel lonely or isolated. It helps them gain a sense of empowerment and control; improve their coping skills and adjustment, as well as providing an opportunity to talk openly and honestly about the illness.
It works towards reducing distress, depression and anxiety; it gives patients a clear understanding of what to expect of their situation; provides practical advice or information about treatment options, and provides updates about new medical research.
Stroke is a chronic condition, an illness that affects survivors, carers and all family members. Between 160 and 200 new victims are treated every year at South Tipp General Hospital. Fifty of these cases are TIAs (Transient Ischaemic Attacks), or mini strokes, which are warning signs.
