Men’s Section

Even the poor weather throughout the weekend didn’t deter the players from getting this annual Winter competition - which is kindly sponsored by the Lemongrass Restaurant group - off to a great start and we are indebted to them for their generosity. Fifty five pairs took to the first tee and the conditions were as tough as they have ever been with strong winds and afternoon of rain on Saturday and an even stronger wind on Sunday.

All of this generally kept the scores down but in the Magic 5 section (for the low handicappers), Edmund Pyke and Thomas O’Neill, off of handicaps 7 and 9 respectively, showed why they are off these low handicaps when they returned a magnificent 7 Up on Sunday morning.

In the next section, the Magic 15 (where both players are Seniors) the brothers Pat and Donal O’Connor off of handicaps 19 and 18, had 3 Up, also on Sunday, and beat Tom Bourke & Liam Maunsell, playing off of 23 and 15 on the count back. And in the Magic 20 section (for two players of any age or handicap) Brian McLean and Paul McGarry off of 7 and 13 had a great 7 Up to win this section. Brian and Paul actually won 8 holes but they were unfortunate when both of them lost the par 3 third. In second place in this section the breakdown went all the way to the wire where Ger Casey and Trevor Gough (16 and 20 handicaps respectively) just pipped Paddy Ryan and Richard Brannigan (13 and 19) on the last 4. These two cards were equal all the way through the breakdown of the last 6, last 3, last 2, last 8, last 10, last 1, last 11 and finally the last 4 before the result was certain.

Just a couple of points when entering the competition on the scorecard: 1 - it is not the Magic 7; 2 - The Magic 5 section is for players of + to 8 playing together; 3 - The Magic 15 section is for Senior players playing together (a Senior golfer is any golfer who is 60 years or over on the day of the competition); 4 - The Magic 20 section is for any players of any age with senior handicaps playing together, and, 5 - Players are reminded to use the universal signs for a Win (+), a Half (0) and a Loss (-) on each hole.

The Captains Drive In

The Captains Drive In on New Year’s Day - Jimmy Cass, Gwen Walshe and Cian Flavin - was very successful and while three very nervous looking new Captains stood before a huge gathering of members on the first tee, they all three drove magnificently into office. The Drive In was preceded by the usual ‘hot ones’ and then 132 ladies & gents took to the course for a very successful 12 hole champagne scramble. We wish them the best of luck for their year ahead.
