Clonmel Golf Club

Playing at the weekend it was hard to believe that just a week ago we were re-arranging postponed competitions and placing the ball everywhere on the course due to the incessant rain during the first three weeks of the month. While it was cold at the weekend – who minds the cold – the course was dry and the greens were as good as anyone has seen them since maybe last October so well done to the course management and staff who have done a great clearing up after the recent monsoon.

The dry weather brought out over a hundred entries for the Danone sponsored weekend and the scoring was excellent. For a while it looked like all the major prizes were going to be divided among four players on 38 points but Derek Nolan, playing off of 13 handicap had the final say with an impressive 39 to pip the field by a single shot. After an opening par and bogey Derek had no point at all on the short third but from there to the end of the round it was mister consistency all the way. He finished the first nine with 20 points and for someone who is not often in the thick of it ‘coming down the straight’ – as they say on the telly – he added a fine 19 points to his first nine tally.

Jim (JF) Ryan (7), Richie Whelan (3) Garrett Condon (7) and Tom Duggan (4) all had 38 points each but had to settle for the lesser prizes while Gavin Smyth (+1) and Edgar Lonergan (7) were also in the prizes.

It was a great weekend of golf with great prizes and we are grateful to Danone for this wonderful sponsorship.

Bulmers Open Singles

After a couple of disappointing weeks the Bulmers sponsorted Open Singles finally got off the ground last week and while the number of entries was small – we’ll blame the weather – the scoring was hot where Liam Maunsell and Billy Hewitt both returned 40 points. On the breakdown Liam had the better back nine so he’s the first qualifier for the Bulmers Open Singles Final on the first Saturday in October.

Niall O’Neill – RIP.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Niall O’Neill during last week and there was a very large gathering of colleagues, friends and golfers for his funeral service on Saturday. Niall will be sadly missed in the Club by all as he was very popular with all the members, not only for his wit, but also for his vast knowledge of matters golf and the history of Clonmel Golf Club.

Niall was a former Captain of the Club and also served on a number of occasions as Honorary Secretary and was a Trustee of the Club up until the time of his passing. Indeed it was on one of those years as Hon Secretaru – 1986 – that Niall was instrumental in introducing a very reasonable membership subscription as a special offer to entice new members to the Club at a time, not unlike now, when the Club was in need of new members to boost the coffers.

At Club meetings and particularly AGMs Niall was always the sage with the answers, and his frequent interventions in dilemmas, whether on policy or golf rules, were a feature of his outstanding service to the Club.
