Clonmel AC’s Sean Tobin put in a blistering performance to finish fourth in the Men’s 3000 metres final at the European Youth Olympics in Trabazon, Turkey where 18 competitors went to the starting line.
The race was held in very demanding 29 degrees with high humidity conditions of 65 degrees,
Sean moved into a nice position early in the pack where he could keep an eye on the proceedings over the 7 and half lap race. The pace was strong going through 1km in 2 mins 53.2 secs.
After the first mile the pace increased and Sean moved up to the front as the race entered into its final stages. The leaders went through 2k in 4 mins 43.26 secs.
Then with 600m to go the leading group was down to 4 with Sean running very well in 3rd place, as they passed the bell for the final lap Sean was still 3rd, then down the back straight the pace increased and Sean gave it everything as he ran a brilliant race to finish 4th in a Personal Best of 8 mins 29.91 secs where three out of the top four finishers ran PBs. What an achievement to finish 4th in a major European final, Clonmel Athletic Club are very proud of such an achievement.
