Zakis and McCann best in glamour Clonmel race

This year’s event was a fantastic success with a record entry of athletes participating.

Right from the start a group of 5 athletes set the pace, David Ryan, Clonmel, Michael Morgan, St Finbarr’s, Brian Murphy, Carrick on Suir, Michael Shannon, St John’s Clare and the eventual winner Raivis Zakis, West Waterford.

These athletes dictated a fast pace going through the first mile in 5 mins 35 secs, 2 miles in 11 mins 20 secs and 3 miles at Barne in 16 mins 58 secs.

On the downhill stretch the pace quickened again with the leaders reaching 4 miles in 22 mins 10 secs. At this stage the leading group of three that included Shannon, Raivis and Brian with Morgan and Ryan in close attention.

These three were still together as they reached 6 miles in 33:12 and 7 miles in 38:33. Then along the Wood Road Michael Shannon upped the pace again with only Raivis responding and then it was down to two.

Michael kept the tempo going strong reaching 8 miles in 43:50, 9 in 49:14, 10 miles in 54 mins 17 secs and 12 miles in 65 mins 28 secs.

All along Raivis was in close attention and inside the final Mile Raivis closed the gap and put in a strong surge with 800m to go and he maintained that strong pace to win a brilliant race in 70 mins 49 secs, brilliant performance by Raivis Zakis.

Then we had Michael Shannon of St John’s Clare running brilliantly to finish 2nd in 71 mins 1 secs with Brian Murphy of Carrick on Suir Road Runners 3rd in 72 mins 34 secs.

Michael Morgan of St Finbarr’s was 4th in 73 mins 4 secs with Trevor Power of Waterford coming through strongly over the final miles to finish 5th in 74 mins 15 secs.

David Ryan of Clonmel Athletic Club also ran very well to win the over 40 award when 6th overall in 74 mins 33 secs with Martin Monaghan of Enniscorthy 2nd over 40 when 9th overall in 77 mins 20 secs.

Fintan Rice of Fethard Athletic Club ran a brilliant race to win the over 45 award when 11th overall in 79 misn 26 secs with Andrew Leary of West Waterford 2nd in 84 mins 9 secs.

Walter Keane of West Waterford was the winner of the over 50 award and he ran very well when finishing 26th overall in 84 mins 19 secs with Declan Flynn of the Stragglers, England finishing 2nd in 85 mins 54 secs.

Tommy Halpin of Ballynonty continued his winning streak in the over 55 awards when coming home 1st 0/55 in 85 mins 32 secs with Gerry Cantwell of West Waterford 2nd 0/55 in 86 mins 56 secs.

In the Ladies race Angela McCann of Clonmel Athletic Club went into the lead very early in the race and was well clear at 6 miles. She maintained that strong pace all the way to win the Ladies race in 81 mins 34 secs when 18th overall. This was great running by Angela who is well used to running this circuit. Martina O’Dwyer of Carrick on Suir Road runners also ran very well when finishing 2nd Senior lady in 84 mins 24 secs with Dymphna Ryan of Dundrum 3rd Senior lady in 86 mins 9 secs. Aoife Quigley of Crusaders also ran well when finishing 4th lady in 90 mins 27 secs with Aideen Shinnors of Limerick 5th Senior Lady in 92 mins 45 secs.
