A Moyglass woman has made angling history after beating off her male rivals in a prestigious international event in County Mayo.

Carla Costigan Blake won the overall points category at the two day International Skate Festival held in Westport . The festival has been going for twenty two years and this is the first time in its history that a female angler has won the overall points title.

Last year she won the ladies title and managed to do the same this year and went a step further to beat off the male competition from Ireland and overseas. Carla only took up angling seven years ago after being encouraged by her father,John, a keen angler.

The pair go out “all year around, whenever the weather allows” on John’s boat from Ferrypoint near Youghal.

“My Dad taught me everything I know,” said Carla who is married to Maurice Blake and they have two children, three year old Lili and twenty month old Sam. I was delighted with the win. I have always done very well in this competition in the ladies section but it was great to finish ahead of the men on this occasion. They took it in good spirits and we had a great weekend,” said Carla who along with her dad is a member of the Coast to Coast Sea Angling Club. “

On the Saturday I caught 25 dogfish worth 4 points each and on Sunday I had another 16 doggies and also 14 thornback ray each worth 12, winning on 332 points in total, 2nd place went to 260 points. We made friends for life at the festival, which is mostly fished by Irish and UK anglers. ”
