Community Games Volunteers were recently in the limelight when they had double engagements at awards ceremonies. One of the highlights of the evening at the Canon Hayes Sports Awards Banquet in Ballykisteen Hotel was Polly Murphy being declared the overall winner of the Volunteer Award Section sponsored by the South Tipperary Sports Partnership.
Polly from Ballydoyle, Rosegreen is Area Secretary of Cashel/Rosegreen Community Games, she was one of seven very worthy nominees who all make a big impact in their communities.
Cashel/Rosegreen area participated in Athletics, Basketball, Chess, Choir, Camogie, Handball, Hurling,Tennis,and Swimming thanks to the motivation of Polly, they were only beaten by one point for the title of best overall area in the county this year.
Polly also plays a leading role in Clonmel Swimming Club and is on several other committees.
Terry Lonergan, Carrick On Suir another of the nominees also gave years of service to Community Games especially in the area of athletics and swimming where Terry, Bobby and their children enjoyed considerable success.
Bill Maher, captain of the Tipperary minor hurling team, was the outright winner of his section of the Canon Hayes County Awards. Bill is a fomer competitor in Athletics and GAA, Proud Mum, Miriam is the current area secretary in Kilsheelan/Kilcash.
The National Area Awards took place in the Shearwater Plaza Hotel in Ballinasloe,
Silvermines area were presented with their award for the best overall area, Seamus Hogan, St Flannan’s won the Adult Volunteer Award while Shane Cooke, Roscrea won the Youth Volunteer Award. Community Games would like to extend their congratulations to everybody who was fortunate enough to be honoured with an award at both of the locations. They are all so well deserved. It is fantastic to see the difference the involvement in sport makes to one’s life
Last county board meeting took place in Hayes Hotel, Thurles on Wednesday, November 21.
The draw for the Winter Games programme took place. Willie Jones and Joan O’Connor were appointed as Co-ordinators for Indoor Soccer in the North and South respectively. Willie intends to have North Final over by the end of January.
Joan proposed Sunday, February 10 for the South Final.
Paul Carew nominated Saturday, February 23 as the date for the County Final of the Talent Competitions to be held in Lattin Cullen
Andy Griffin confirmed that Art & Model Making would take place on March 2 in Clonmel.
Louise Lannigan suggested March 8 as the provisional date for the Juvenile Quiz in Thurles.
The Handwriting and Projects will be hosted by Silvermines. - Projects on March 23 or 24.
Dates to be confirmed for the following:- Cross Country, Chess, Draughts, Cycling on Grass, Gymnastics and Swimming,
Due to National Finals of Cycling, Gymnastics, Judo, and Swimming all being brought forward to Weekend 1 in May, these events will have to take place much earlier in the county. Tom O’Ceallaigh is currently working on a date for Swimming which will take place in Clonmel. Chairman, Andy Griffin, confirmed there is no lower age limit in the Project Events.
Andy suggested that plans for “The Gathering” should be considered by areas and ideas submitted early in the New Year.
John O’Donoghue, Cashel is investigating the availability of a One Ball Handball Alley.
Weekend 1 of the Munster Finals are in Tralee on Saturday, March 30 - Easter Saturday.
Sunday June 16 was confirmed as the date for County Athletics Finals
Nominations and delegates were sanctioned for the 2013 Munster AGM on December 9.
County entry fees to remain at €2.00 per individual event and €6.00 per team
Closing Date for Area Affiliation and Team Entries for the Summer Games Programme must be submitted on or before Wednesday, January 9, 2013 which is the same day as the next county board meeting
