Dundrum was the venue for the County Road Relays last Sunday. We had two teams in the Ladies competition and here we saw great performances from all 8 athletes with the team of Cliona Doyle, Kate Wall, Nicola Maunsell and Aine Roche winning the Club title in 23 mins 26 secs while our team of Suzanne Shine, Marianne Kennedy, Sarah Whelan and Donna Nagle won the B Section in 25 mins 23 secs. Congrats to Kate, Nicola, Suzanne and Marianne for winning their first County Senior relay medals.

In the Men’s race we had three teams representing the Club with two of them getting among the medals. The team of Ian Purcell, William Maunsell, Evan Egana and Niall McCormack ran brilliantly to win the County Senior Road Relay title in 18 mins 6 secs for the first time since 2000. This team also created a new course record as this is the first time that this Championship was held under the new format of 800m, 1500m, 800m and 3000M. In 2000 the winning team was Myles McHugh, Thomas Walsh, Jimmy McHugh and Patrick Guidera.

Then we had the team of Neil Fox, Nigel O’Flaherty, Donal Casey and Gary Grant running very well to win the Bronze medal in Section B when finishing in 21 mins 33 secs. Our 3rd team of Niall O’Sullivan, Noel Gillman, Aidan Cremin and Mark Corcoran were 5th in 22 mins 52 secs. All these athletes except for Evan Egan and William Maunsell were winning their first County senior medals; Evan and William were on last year’s team that won Bronze medals. Indeed looking back at past records this was the first time in the Club’s History that we won both the Ladies and Men’s relay title in the same season, so well done to all concerned.

County Novice Road Championships are hosted by the Club this Sunday. The Race Headquarters will be the Vocational School, the Mall where entries will be taken from 11.15am onwards. The majority of our Ladies are eligible for this Championship and we would encourage as many as possible to compete for the Club. Presently everyone is eligible to compete except for Catherine Rice, Angela McCann, Donna Nagle and Kate Wall, so hopefully we will be well represented.

The Men’s race will start after the ladies race is finished at approx 12.25pm. Here again all our athletes except Kevin Maunsell, last year’s winner, are eligible to compete in this 6k race and so hopefully as many of our members as possible will compete.

Great performances at All Ireland Juniors

The All Ireland Junior indoor Championships took place in Athlone last weekend. In the Junior Women 1500m Aoife Laste ran very well when finishing 4th in 5 mins 5.50 secs and in the process setting a PB while just narrowly missing out on a medal very close to the finishing line. In the Junior Men’s 1500m Michael Carey ran very well when finishing 2nd in 4 mins 5.85 secs to set a new PB for the distance. In the Junior Men’s 3k walk we had fine performances from both Aaron Egan and Anthony Tobin when winning the Silver and Bronze medals in 13 mins 38.03 secs and 14 mins 46.51 secs respectively. Aaron set a new PB while Anthony set a seasonal Best.

Carriginore County Waterford was the venue last week for the Munster Schools Cross Country Championships. What a day for the Tobin family as they must have created a piece of history when both Laura and Sean led their Senior School teams to Munster Schools Cross Country titles when representing the Loreto Convent and Clonmel High School respectively.

In the Senior Girls race Laura ran the proverbial blinder when finishing 4th in 10 mins 41 secs and with Aoife Laste running very well when 5th in 10:50 and Megan O’Brien also running very well when finishing 11th in 11:30, they combined to win the Senior Girls School title for the very first time for Loreto Convent. In the Boys equivalent Sean showed that he is returning to good form after been laid low by the flu in recent weeks when winning the Senior Boy’s title in 18:51. Michael Carey was 3rd and winning the Bronze medal in 19:08. Evan Egan 13th in 21:38, Shane Moloney 25th, Stijn van der Wal 34th, James Murphy 41st, Andrius Kurkarvicious 46th and Jack Allen 57th. Earlier in the day we had good performances from Orlaith Moynihan who was 7th in the Inter Girls race. In the Inter Boys Daragh Phelan was 27th, Eoin Hoctor 29th and Anthony Tobin 30th all representing the Clonmel high School. In the Junior Girls Beth Fitzpatrick of Loreto Convent Clonmel was 30th.

In the Girls under 10 Long Jump Gretta Nugent jumped 3.2m to finish 8th with Maedbh Mulcahy jumping 2.90m.

In the Girls under 11 Long Jump Veerle van der Wal jumped 3.22m when finishing a close 6th with Aine Grace jumping 2.95m and Robyn O Flynn 2.75m.

In the Boys under 13 600m Shane Fitzgibbon ran very well when finishing 7th in 1 min 56.3 secs.
