Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club is to stage one of the country’s largest motorsport shows in Kilkenny next month.
The day long inaugural Irish Motorsport Exposition at The Hub arena in Cillin Hill on the Carlow Road close to Kilkenny City on Sunday, May 22 is expected to draw up to 6000 motorsport fans from all over the region.
Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club PRO Trevor McGrath said the show will focus on the sport at grassroots level and how a young person can join a club and get involved in motorsport.
The event will feature 25 exhibitors showcasing all aspects of Irish motorsport from engine and gearbox building to tyres with all the disciplines in the sport represented.
Mr McGrath said another section of the show will be devoted to promoting road safety.
“Within the last month Ireland’s motorsport governing body, Motorsport Ireland, joined forces with the Irish Roads Safety Authority to launch a new safety initiative concentrating on young drivers.
“Both organizations will be on hand at the expo to raise awareness for this new initiative and promote this new scheme,” he said.
The exposition will also be the occasion for the announcement of details of Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club’s top event of the year - the Ravens Rock Rally, which will take place in Kilkenny on June 26 for the second year in a row.
Various rally cars competing in the race will take on a specially built course outside Cillin Hill to mark the event’s official launch.
After the Ravens Rock Rally launch, a Motorsport Forum will take place back at The Hub. It will focus on the youngest talent in Irish rallying and will be chaired by Irish motorsport journalist Martin Walsh.
A quiz competition is being run in conjunction with the Motorsport Exposition to guess The Stig. An attractive prize will be on offer to the person, who guesses the mystery racing driver’s identity.
Mr McGrath said if the show is a success, the Club plans to stage it again next year on a bigger scale.
He said it was great to have an indoor arena like The Hub available just a short distance away to accommodate the event.
The Club staged a very successful outdoor motorsport show at Belline in Piltown in 2008 to mark the Club’s 40th anniversary.
