Leahy and McCann win Boston half marathon

The Boston Scientific Half Marathon took place in Clonmel last Sunday morning in ideal weather conditions. Over 300 athletes went to the starting line on the Clonmel Bypass. Right from the start Brian Leahy of Raheny Shamrocks stamped his authority on the race as he went into the lead after the initial charge and he led them through the first mile in 5 mins 34 secs with Dan King from Cobh leading the chasing pack with Declan Doherty and Vasiliy Neumerzhitskily in close attention.

Right from the start Brian Leahy of Raheny Shamrocks stamped his authority on the race as he went into the lead after the initial charge and he led them through the first mile in 5 mins 34 secs with Dan King from Cobh leading the chasing pack with Declan Doherty and Vasiliy Neumerzhitskily in close attention.

Brian maintained this strong pace throughout the race, passing 10 miles in 56 mins 49 secs and he went on to win this great event in 74 mins 44 secs. King was 2nd in 77 mins 412 secs while the large attendance witnessed a great sprint finish for 3rd place between Doherty of Thurles Crokes and local athlete Vasiliy Neumerzhitskily with Declan edging it close to the line when finishing in 78 mins 46 secs with Vasiliy finishing in 78 mins 47 secs to win the 0/45 award.

David Ryan, Clonmel was 4th Senior man in 80 mins 50 secs with Dariuz Kuranda of Ennis Track Club 5th Senior Man in 82 mins 55 secs. The 0/40 award was won by Mark Wolfe of Cork in 81 mins 57 secs with Pat Bookle of St Joseph’s 2nd in 84 mins 7 secs. Brian Grogan of Clare was 2nd 0/45 in 88 mins 51 secs. Brendan Ahearne of Kilsheelan won the 0/50 award in 86 mins 42 secs with Brendan Cronin of Carrick on Suir 2nd in 88 mins 48 secs.

Tommy Cahill of Clonmel Athletic Club won the 0/55 award in 88 mins 12 secs with Martin Daly 2nd in 96 mins 42 secs.

Angela McCann retained her title when winning the Ladies race very convincingly when finishing 6th overall in 81 mins 28 secs. Tracey Roche of Dooneen was 2nd in 86 mins 13 sec, Maria McCarthy of Midleton was 3rd Lady in 87 mins 26 secs with Noreen McGettigan of Letterkenny 4th in 87 mins 44 secs. Louise Barrett of Clonmel Athletic Club was 5th Senior lady in 103 mins 10 secs.

Ciara Foster of Sportsworld won the 0/35 award in 92 mins 19 secs with Anne Wolfe, St Finbarr’s 2nd in 97 mins 7 secs. Fiona Bourke Barlow, Clonmel won the Ladies 0/40 award in 101 mins 49 secs with Catherine Condron of Clare 2nd in 104 mins 46secs. Anne Dunford of West Waterford won the Ladies 0/45 award in 103 mins 12 secs with Catherine Hogan of Tipperary Town 2nd in 116 mins 56 secs. Maura Falsey of Clare won the Ladies over 50 award in 112 mins 16 secs with Marian Hughes of Thurles Crokes 2nd in 119 mins 8 secs.
