The Club helped with the first promotion of the Newcastle 5k road race that took place in ideal conditions last Sunday. The race attracted a very good entry with many people from the local community participating.
John Shanahan of Dundrum moved well clear over the early stages and made every step a winning one as he came home to win very convincingly in 16 mins 35 secs. Pre Christmas 4K Road Race Series
The Club is once again promoting a series of 6 races in October, November and December over 4k, a distance that caters for all levels of fitness and this series of races is open to everyone over 18 years of age. This series has grown in stature over the years and in last year’s event we had a total of 297 athletes who competed in at least one race. The level of fitness among the participants varied from under 14 mins to over 29 minutes, so everyone is catered for. This series is ideal for helping people to Get Fit and Stay Fit over the winter months and many athletes used it last year as part of their training for the annual St Stephen’s Day 4 mile event.
They start on October 31 at 7 pm at the Brothers of Charity, Silversprings, Clonmel. We would ask all intending participants to come early, from 6.15pm onwards to register as the races will start at 7pm sharp. The race will also take place on Wednesday, November 7, 14, 21 and 28 as well as December 5.
This year we will once again use a stagger start involving three groups. Group One will be for athletes who can run this distance faster than 17 minutes, Group Two will be for athletes who can run this distance between 17 minutes and 20 minutes, Group Three is for athletes that can run the distance over 20 minutes. When athletes are registering, they will be asked their likely finishing times and they will be grouped in the above mentioned groups and athletes in each group will be given a different Colour number.
