Clonmel AC promoted a very successful 4 miles road race on St Stephenâ€™s Day.
Weather conditions leading up to the race was heavy rain and wind but by race time athletes were treated to sunny but breezy conditions especially on the return journey back to Clonmel. Still the race attracted a very good entry of 397 athletes and right from the start the pace was hot.
The early pace was set by the winner Sergio Ciobanu (Clonliffe Harriers) and the Clonmel trio of Sean Tobin and William and Kevin Maunsell. The leaders clipped along at a strong tempo going through 1 mile in 4:35, 2 miles in 9:21 and 3 miles in 14:16. At this stage Sergio had a lead on the chasing pack which he held all the way to the line to win in 19 mins 17 secs. Kevin Maunsell also ran very well when finishing 2nd in 19:33 with Sean Tobin 3rd in 19:36 and William Maunsell 4th in 20:03. Michael Carey of Clonmel AC was 5th in 20:06 and duly wont the Junior Menâ€™s prize. The 5th Senior man was Paul Stephenson (Rathfarnham Ajax) in 20:12. Kenny Curran (Ballynonty) was 1st over 40 in 22:10 with Paudie Oâ€™Keeffe (Clonmel AC) 2nd in 22:42. Tom Blackburn (Moore Abbey Milers) won the over 45 award in 22:40 with Fintan Rice (Fethard) 2nd in 22:50. Benny English and Michael Moore recorded a Dundrum 1, 2 in the over 45 awards when finishing 23:45 and 23:58 respectively. Matt Alexander (Coolquill) won the over 55 award in 25:05 with Michael Ormonde (Kilsheelan) winning the over 60 award in 29:02 and Myles McHugh (Clonmel AC) winning the over 65 award in 33:02. The 2nd Junior Menâ€™s ward was won by James Murphy (Clonmel) in 23:56
The Ladies race saw Angela McCann (ClonmelAC) run very well when winning in 23 mins 30 secs. Aine Roche (Clonmel AC) was 2nd in 25:20 with Marie Fitzgibbon (Thurles Crokes) 3rd in 25:35, 4th was Suzanne Shine (Clonmel AC) in 27:53 with Claire Devitt (Dundrum) 5th in 28:52. Johanna Lacy (Clonmel AC) won the over 35 award in 27:06 with Aine Doocey (Fethard) 2nd in 30:18. Fiona Barlow (Clonmel AC) was 1st over 40 in 28:09 with Nicola Maunsell (Clonmel AC) 2nd in 28:38. Liz Ryan (Clonmel AC) won the over 45 award in 29:11 with Una Redfern (Clonmel AC) 2nd in 29:58. Mary Mulcahy (St Finbarrs) was 1st over 50 in 31:59. Anne Ryan (Clonmel) won the over 55 award in 37:58. Aoife Laste won the Junior Women award in 27:24 with Jenna Boland Dundrum 2nd in 31:24.
The Club Chairman, Frank Lynch, thanks the Gardai, Civil Defence and the many stewards who marshalled the route for all their help. He also thanked the Couth Tipperary Vocational Committee for the use of their fine facilities at the Mall for our race headquarters.
