Cliodhna Sheehy and Rachel Perdue represented their schools and their club, Cashel/New-Inn Hockey Club, at the Under 18 and 16 Girls Interprovincial Tournaments held at Three Rock Rovers in Dublin, last weekend.
The Interprovincial Finals are a very important part of Irish hockey as from this tournament many go on to play International Hockey. Munster, Leinster, Connacht, Ulster and South-east all participate in the tournament. Ulster were the winners in both events.
The U18 Munster team came fourth and the U16 team came third. Cliodhna is a sixth year student at Hewitt College, Cork, and Rachel is a third year student at Ursuline Convent, Thurles. Both girls have been training with Munster for the last six months and are wished well as they continue to play with their schools and club for the winter.
Start to hockey season
Cashel/New-Inn hockey club played their first match of Divison 3 in UCC on Sunday, October 7.
They started off the season with a 2-0 win with goals from Suzanne O’Connor and Katie O’Connor. Their second game was against Dungarvan in Rockwell last Friday night. It took the girls the first half to settle into the game and went in 3-0 up at half time with two goals from Margaret-Ann Cooney and one from Elaine Crosee. In the second half Suzanne O’Connor, Katie O’Connor and Cora Hennessey got a goal each to finish off the game 6-0. The defence were solid as ever with Caroline Maher,Mary Cooney, Maire O’ Neill and Emma Shana han.
The division 6 team had an extremely tough opposition in their first game. They had to travel away to face Limerick. Caroline Maher made numerous great saves in the match and the score at half time was 0-0. Unfortunately Limerick got in for three goals in the second half and our forwards were very unlucky not to score. The second game they played was in Rockwell against Belvedere. It was another great performance from the girls with an outstanding performance from Carol Casey in the mids and Elaine Crosse and Trisha Maher in defence. Eleanor Browne and Judith Shortall made great debuts also fighting hard for every ball.
Div 3 are playing league winners of Division 3 last season next Saturday in Cork at 2pm and the Division 6 team are away as well to Ashton on Sunday at 2pm
