David Murphy from Knockannaveigh, New Inn and a student at Rockwell College has been selected to play for Southern Ireland against Northern Ireland in a representative cricket fixture next week.
David, who started to play cricket 3 years ago, is a member of Laois Cricket Club where he is captain of the club’s U15 team and plays on the men’s 3rd team in the Leinster Leagues.
David initially started playing with Clonmel CC but moved to Laois to get regular underage cricket.
‘Unfortunately there was no organised underage structure in Munster and players need regular games to develop’ said Murphy.
‘The young players in the top clubs are playing 3-4 matches a week throughout the season and it’s hard to compete at this level if you are only playing the odd friendly’ he adds.
David, who is a fast opening bowler, trains daily on an improvised cricket pitch on the family’s nursery in New Inn. He spent the winter training indoors using the gym in Rockwell College and travelled to Dublin every Friday evening to train with the Leinster U15 squad.
The match next week is part of the selection process for the Irish International U14 team and Murphy hopes that a good performance will advance his chances of selection for the August internationals.
