2012 couldn’t have ended on a better note for the club and the town of Cashel with the news that Larkspur Park has been approved for funding from South Tipperary Development Company (Leader) of just under €200,000 to enhance the recreational and ancillary amenities in the park.
This funding will go towards the erection of a new tennis court, upgrading the existing courts, lights and clubhouse.
Approximately 18 months ago it was obvious the membership was growing at a rapid pace and it was decided that the facilities needed to be updated.
A sub-committee was set-up and the ball was put into motion.
Visits to various tennis courts were made and many meetings were held and at every meeting one voice kept saying that funding was available.
That voice was none other than Rosemary Maher who left no stone unturned when completing the application form together with help from local man Robert Cummins, Golden/Kilfeacle of Cummins Voortman Architects.
All that work and effort came to fruition with the signing of the contracts with Leader in the clubhouse last week.
Work hopefully will commence in January 2013 under the watchful eye of Robert Cummins and by the end of March we hope to have a state of the art facility for tourists and the people of the town and surrounding localities.
As the tennis calendar draws to a close we reflect back on another very successful year and by all accounts we have a bright future to look forward to in 2013.
Both our Juvenile and Senior committees ran two very successful Tennis Open Weeks. Junior and Senior players travelled from different clubs in Munster to participate in our tournaments.
Alzheimer’s Family Day
Our Alzheimer’s Family Day raised €1,690 for the Le Cairde Alzheimer’s Unit in Cashel.
The club holds internal Spring and Winter League competitions with over 130 players competing in each event as well as our very successful Junior and Senior Club championships.
Our Juveniles won silver medals in the community games and our U12s were beaten in the final of the Munster Cup Competition and Cashel Community School team won the Munster Cup but all players were from Larkspur.
Two teams competed in the Munster Summer Cup finals in St. Anne’s, in Waterford with our Grade 3 team bringing home the honours.
We had seven teams competing in the Tipperary League and our Premier team were crowned winners.
Also a lot of our players took part in Inter Firms, Opens weeks and veterans around Munster and again the club had some great wins.
Our clubs two coaches were kept busy all year with over 160 junior players receiving coaching. All these junior players will be the makings of our club in years to come. There are also over 30 senior players receiving coaching.
The club year starts April 1 so new members are always welcome and membership forms are available in the clubhouse.
On behalf of our Junior and Senior Chairpersons Sharon Perdue and Benny Dudley respectively would like to wish all our members a Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year and to loads of tennis and our new development in 2013!
