The County Ladies 5k and Men’s 10K Road Race Championships takes place in Fethard on Sunday 19th May at 12 noon. This is the first time these Championships will be hosted by the local club with the Ladies race starting at 12 noon followed by the Men’s 10K.
In these Championships there is also a B Section for Clubs who enter more than one team, this should ensure that there will be good entries in both the Ladies and Men’s races as Clubs are encouraged to enter as many teams as possible. Eligibility for these Championships is that an athlete must be 20 years and over by the 31st December 2013.
The Ladies 5K race will see the defending Champion Angela McCann making a bold bid to retain her title. She is running well at present but will have to run very well to achieve her goal as there will be tough competition led by Dundrum’s Dymphna Ryan who recently beat her in the Cahir 4 mile race. Other athletes that will provide tough competition will be Martina O’Dwyer and Claire Annan of Carrick on Suir and if Margaret Danagher (Templemore), Madeline Loughnane (Thurles Crokes) and Siobhain O’Doherty (Borrisokane) compete we will have a top class field competing.
In the team event the defending Champions are Clonmel and they will once again be looking to Angela, Johann Lacy, Aine Roche and co to defend their title. They will face tough competition from Thurles Crokes who can also call upon Martina Ryan and the Fitzgibbon sisters, Maire and Carmel while Carrick on Suir, Moyne and Moore Abbey Milers will also be determined to get among the team medals.
The Men’s race should be another great race and very keen competition as defending Champion Kevin Moore will be going all out to retain his title. Kevin is running very well at present having finished 2nd in the Faugheen 5K recently. He will face tough competition from other in form athletes like Brian Murphy (Carrick on Suir), David Ryan (Clonmel), Patrick Hughes, the current County Intermediate Champion and Tony Fogarty (Thurles Crokes) and Danny Smith (Ballynonty).
In the team event the defending Champions are Dundrum and they will once again look to the talents of Kevin, John Shanahan, Donal Keane and Michael Ryan to retain their title for another year. They will face good competition from Carrick on Suir, who will be looking for their first title at this level as they can call upon David Waters, Patrick Roche, Daragh Byrnes and Tommy Falconer while the Thurles Crokes charge will be led by Patrick Hughes who along with Tony, Shane Mullaney, Denis Shanahan and Declan Doherty. Then you have clubs like Coolquill, Clonmel, Ballynonty, Moyne, Moore Abbey Milers and Fethard who will be trying to make their mark in these Championships.
There are great races for the month of May, organised by Clubs and approved by Athletics Ireland. Athletes are spoiled for choice as they have a number of distances to compete over ranging from 2 miles to 10K. Athletes are asked to support these races as they are an important source of revenue for the local Club who will plough that money back into improving their Club’s activities.
