Last weekend Clonmel Rowing Club were competing in the Irish Rowing Championships held in Inniscarra, County Cork over 3 days at the National Rowing Centre against more than 70 clubs from all over the country, including Northern Ireland. The standard of rowing was extremely high this year, with weather conditions deteriorating to near unrowable conditions by the third day. But despite the horrendous weather and stiff opposition, Clonmel had some wonderful wins and placing throughout the 3 days.
Wins went to the junior mens 14 coxed quad of Sean Lonergan, Shay Whelan, Shane Stafford, Chris Lumley with Daniel O’Sullivan coxing and Sean O’Brien and Stewart Channon in the junior mens 15 single scull. Clonmel had a second with Pat Kinsella in the single scull Masters event, and bronze medals for the junior 18 womens coxless four of Kellie Hogan, Aoife Roberts, Niamh McNally and Shauna Kinsella, and bronze for the novice women coxed quad of Riona Coyne, Niamh Cahill, Rachel O’Meara, Emily Read with Daniel O’Sullivan coxing.
Clonmel now has a second member of the club, Alan Prendergast, selected for the Home International Squad which will be competing and representing Ireland in Strathclyde, Glasgow Scotland at the end of this month. Alan with be competing in the lightweight double scull event and Liam McCarthy competing in the junior 18 mens double scull.
