Moyne hosted the County B Cross Country Championships last Sunday in wet conditions. In the Ladies 3K three athletes competed with Sinead Oakes of Nenagh Olympic running a very good race to win her first County title. Club mate Cliona McGrath won Silver with Maire Fitzgibbon of Thurles Crokes winning Bronze.
The Men’s race attracted a 24 athletes and competition was keen. Ran over 4 laps of a good course with a nice incline on each lap the athletes had to contend with heavy rain and cold conditions just like the athletes in the Ladies race. On the first lap Donal Horgan of Coolquill and the eventual winner, David Shelly (Ballynonty) took up the pace and soon opened a good lead on the chasing pack of Dermot Logue (Coolquill), Gerard O’Loughlin (Clonmel) and the three Dundrum athletes Graham Butler, Tommy Byrnes and Colm Bradshaw. The two leaders were full of running and over the closing stages David pulled clear of Donal to win his first Individual title. This was a great win by David and we will see more of David in the months ahead as he is one of the most improved athletes this year. Donal Horgan won the Silver medal. Graham Butler underlined the great progress he has made this year when emerging out of the chasing pack and in a hectic finish won the Bronze medal from Dermot Logue 4th and Gerard O’Loughlin 5th in close attention. Tommy Byrnes was 6th, 7th Colm Bradshaw, 8th Michael Carey, Coolquill and 9th Liam Kelly, Moyne. Indeed it is great to see names like Sinead Oakes, Cliona McGrath, Maire Fitzgibbon, David Shelly, Donal Horgan and Graham Butler on the podium as these are emerging stars that we will hear more off in the months and years ahead.
In the team event competition was very keen with Coolquill winning the title and thus denying Dundrum of a historic six in a row. The Gold medal winning team of Coolquill were Donal Horgan, Dermot Logue and Michael Carey. The Dundrum team that finished 2nd were Graham Butler, Tommy Byrnes and Colm Bradshaw. David Shelly had the distinction of leading his Club to Bronze and the rest of the team were Conor Prendergast and Noel O’Dwyer.
