The first race of the Morrison BMW, Cahir sponsored Inter Firms 6k road race took place last week in sunny and dry conditions.

The race attracted a record entry of 304 athletes representing 71 teams for firms and business throughout South Tipperary. Clonmel Athletic Club would like to thank all the team Captains for such organisation. The Club would like to thank all our Stewards, throughout the course, for their hard work in ensuring the whole event went off smoothly. It would also like to thank the Gardai for their help in ensuring the safety of the athletes throughout the race and the Civil Defence for providing Marshalling and First Aid.

Well done to Graham O’Dwyer of Kentz Construction Group who was our 1st finisher in 20:22 with Patrick Roche of Formula 5 was 2nd in 21:26 and Fintan Rice of the Real McCoys 3rd in 21:34.

In the team competition we have 6 Divisions this year, such is the interest. For many athletes tonight was their first run over this route and so it was hard for them to accurately predict their time. Taking this into account we have brought in a Default System just for results. In Division One the default is that all the teams regardless of what they scored they are within 40 points of the Leaders, in Division Two it is also a default of within 40 points of the leaders. In Division Three and Four it is a default of within 50 points of the Leaders. In Division Five and Six it is a default of within 60 points of the Leaders. This format gives every team a chance of success.

Over the next two races there will be no Default that means that whatever points your team accumulates, on these two races, that score will be added to your Default points after the race. Also keep in mind that it is the combined total of the three lowest scorers on a team that will count each night. So if one athletes predicts 30 mins and runs 29 mins 30 secs, its -30 secs, another athlete on the team runs 29 mins and predicts 29 mins 10 secs, that plus 10 seconds while the 3rd athlete to count on the team runs 29 mins 5 secs while predicting 29 mins, that plus 5 seconds, so their combined score is 45 seconds. The team with the lowest number of points wins.

The best three athletes, who finish closest to their time, not where they finished in the race, will count for their team. So you, the athlete, can set your own time each night and go for it.

So best of luck in the weeks ahead and I hope to see you all again on Wednesday next and remember the race goes off at 7 pm.

As regards the way we drew up the Divisions, Divisions One and Two are teams that have some experienced athletes in them. Division Three and Four are for teams that have a mixture of experience and newcomers while Division Five and Six are for Newcomers. For the full Individual and team results see results on www.clonmelac.com.

Also please note that for the remaining three races of the series we will be giving out the team numbers at the Vocational School, the Mall from 6 pm onwards.
