Tony wins Trustees Prize at Clonmel Golf Club

Tony (Noggy to his friends) Norris shot a brilliant 64 to win the Trustees Prize on Sunday last but only by a single shot from Edmund Pyke. Neither Tony nor Edmund are strangers to the podium for the big competitions as Tony won the Vice Captains Prize this year and Edmund recently won the Presidents Prize.

Tony did not get off to an encouraging start when he double bogeyed the second hole and had another bogey at the short third. He then birdied the par 5 fourth but immediately gave it back to the course at the 5th. However, three pars in a row and a birdie at the ninth gave him a great outward nine of just two over par.

It looked like the nerves were beginning to take their toll when he bogeyed 10, 11 and 12 but got back on track again at the next couple of holes before finally nailing the prize with two marvellous finishing birdies for a 1 over back nine and a great 64.

Edmund Pyke may have considered that it was his day when he had an outward nine of 1 under par but bogeys on five of the inward nine holes put paid to his chances of a second top podium place in a short few weeks. Jim Butler took third, Gavin Smyth had the best gross and Tom O’Donnell was the best senior. Our sincere thanks to the Trustees – Maura Morrison / Tom Bourke / Niall O’Neill – for their generous sponsorship.

Player of the Year Competition Hotting Up!

The Trustees Prize was the penultimate round of the Player of the Year competition and until last Sunday it looked like John Molloy was too far ahead of the field for any other player to make an impact on his lead but Tony Norris has closed the gap considerably with his win in the Trustees Prize. John was on 32 points and will possibly add a couple from the Trustees Prize but Tony Norris added 10 on Sunday to his previous 16 which should make the final game in the Player of the Year competition, the Autumn Medal, on Sunday next, sponsored by Kevin O’Leary Motors, the deciding game between the two leaders to become the Player of the Year 2012 – may the best man win!
