September 1 will be an exciting day for Irish throwing, the date for the inaugural International Throws Festival that will be hosted by Tipperary County Board along with Templemore Athletic Club and Athletics Ireland.

Tipperary had a great tradition of Hammer throwing in the past with athletes like Olympic Champions Matt McGrath in Stockholm (1912) and Pat O’Callaghan in both Amsterdam (1928) and in Los Angeles (1932).

In this competition there will be National teams from Ireland, Switzerland, Iceland and Wales who will fight for honours at the end of a great year for Irish throwing. All competing countries hope that this will be the first year of this annual quadrangular fixture. A full program featuring all 4 throwing events has been scheduled.

The programme will get underway at 12 noon on Saturday next with the Mens Javlin followed by Mens Shot Putt and Womens Discus at 12.45, Men’s Hammer at 1.40, Women’s Hammer at 2.30, Men’s Discus and Womens Shot Putt at 3.20 and the final event will be the Women’s Javlin at 4.10pm. The Medal ceremony will take place after each event. The competition will be followed by a High Performance Clinic for Javelin and Rotational Shot put from 5.15 to 7.30pm for selected athletes & coaches. All are welcome to observe. Athletes from Iceland, Switzerland, Wales and Ireland will compete in this high profile event.
