Clonmel to host another Holy Thursday fixture to kickstart Easter

Clonmel Racecourse has confirmed it will once again host a race meeting on Holy Thursday, March 28. This will be the third consecutive year that a meeting has been staged at Powerstown Park on the eve of the Easter weekend.

However to facilitate those who would also like to attend Easter religious ceremonies on Holy Thursday, the racing has been moved forward to the early afternoon with the first race due off at approx 2pm.

Eugene Cooney, Marketing Manager at the racecourse says - “We were offered the Holy Thursday date three years ago and thought it would be a great way for people locally to start their Easter break. However we found that the 5pm kick-off worked against us as many of our regular patrons were anxious not to miss the Church ceremonies. We hope that by moving the racing forward to the afternoon, those regulars will now be able to come racing and we will also get a good few ‘social racegoers’ that are finishing up work early for the Easter.

Mr Cooney is also hoping to get a sponsor for the new 2.5 mile Steeplechase that has been added to the programme of racing that day. He says race sponsorship can be tailor-made to suit the size of a business and to fulfil their expectation from the day.

“Some businesses get involved for National or International exposure, some use the opportunity to reward staff or entertain customers and others simply get involved to support the local racecourse. In fact for most sponsors it is a mixture of all these things”.

Mr Cooney also reports that 313,000 viewers switched on to the Attheraces channel at least once during the coverage of the races from Clonmel on Thursday, February 7.

“This was our Surehaul Race Day so obviously we were delighted to be able to give our sponsor these viewing figures. 67,000 of those were in Ireland and the remainder were in the UK. ‘Attheraces’ cover all 12 meetings at Clonmel so the same exposure is there for any business that wishes to come on board as a race sponsor”.

Meanwhile there is also a meeting at Clonmel this Thursday (February 21) and again on Thursday, March 7. Anyone wishing to contact Eugene Cooney about race sponsorship or about simply bringing a group to the races can ring him at 052 6188508.

In this, the ‘Year of the Gathering’ he is also offering a sizeable discount on admission prices to anyone that would like to bring a group from abroad, big or small, to the races at Clonmel. Details of all fixtures can be found at www.clonmelraces.ie
