The Turnpike was the venue for this year’s County Novice B Cross Country Championships which were held in ideal conditions.
Moycarkey Coolcroo club had everything in order for these Championships and we are very grateful to Donal Hayes and his family for the use of his fine facilities.
These Championships are often the stepping stones for athletic careers and on last Sunday we witnessed two rising stars of the sport, names that we will read about in the years ahead.
In the Ladies race over 3K after Patsy Dorney set them on their way a small group of three set the pace and they included Lyndsey Dooley of Thurles Crokes who led from the start as well as the Moyne duo of Frances Long and Bridget Gleeson, they were closely followed by the Moore Abbey Milers trio of Mairead Mulcahy, Maire O’Shea and Martina Moloney along with Fiona Barlow of Clonmel with the rest of the field in close attention.
Going out on the final lap Frances Long and Bridget Gleeson forced the pace and soon they were joined by Mairead Moloney with the other athletes in close attention.
These three athletes were now trying to assert their authority on the race as they tried to get away from the rest of the field but they weren’t getting too far away as every position and yard was hard fought.
With 400m to go Frances Long (Moyne) dug deep again and held a slight lead as they came into the finishing straight and she maintained that great effort despite some late challenges to come home a very worthy champion in 13 mins 1 sec with Bridget Gleeson (Moyne) getting up close to the line to win the Silver medal in 13 mins 3 secs with Mairead Mulcahy (Moore Abbey Milers) hanging on to the Bronze medal in 13 mins 5 secs.
Fiona Barlow of Clonmel was 4th in 13 mins 8 secs, Maire O’Shea 5th in 13 mins 9 secs, Martina Moloney 6th in 13 mins 27 secs, 7th Lyndsey Dooley, Thurles Crokes 13 mins 38 secs, 8th Trish Blackburn (Moore Abbey Milers) 13:46, 9th Anna Byrne (Clonmel) 13:54 and 10th Patricia Ryan (Moyne) 14 mins 7 secs.
The Moyne team of Frances, Bridget and Patricia won the Gold medals, Moore Abbey team of Mairead, Maire and Martina won Silver while the Clonmel team of Fiona, Anna and Jemma McLoughlin 13th took Bronze medals.
In the Men’s 6K race four athletes set the pace, the Thurles Crokes duo of Liam Shanahan and John Fitzgibbon as well as Dermot Logue (Coolquill) and the winner Colm Bradshaw (Dundrum).
These four set a very strong pace that soon had the field in single file.
They maintained this pace over the majority of the race and they were still together as they went out on their final lap. Colm Bradshaw then put in a sustained effort that saw him open a sizeable lead and he came home a very worthy Champion in 21:34. Dermot Logue (Coolquill) took Silver in 21 mins 45 secs and John Fitzgibbon (Thurles Crokes) Bronze in 21:51 with his club mate Liam Shanahan 4th in 21:57. Paudie Coen (Dundrum) was 5th in 22:20, 6th Eoin Woolley (Nenagh) 22:42, 7th Sean Healy (Moycarkey Coolcroo) 22:47, 8th Jody Sweeney (Moyne) 22:56, 9th Michael Carey (Coolquill) 23:04 and 10th Ml Ferncombe (Dundrum) 23:07.
