Ss Peter and Paul’s, Clonmel once again hosted the county finals of the Community Games skittles championships in the picturesque surroundings of Hillview Sports Centre which was kindly arranged for us by the co-ordinators
Matt and Adrian Anglim, who do such great work behind the scenes for this sport.
We were also fortunate to have the club president, Frankie Gubbins, in attendance.
Frankie presented the medals to all the teams who qualified for the finals and gave them some words of wisdom and encouragement.
Ss Peter and Paul’s completed a double, winning both the under 14 and 16 championships while Ballingarry won the under 12 competition.
Ss Peter and Pauls got off to a flying start in the under 12 event beating Silvermines by 229 – 63 and 224 – 73 points in the semi final but Jesse Donovan had the team from Ballingarry who were defending their title and were also winners of gold medals at the HSE National Finals last year on their first venture to Athlone geared for action with a determination which resulted in a 399 to 205 victory in the final. Several spectators remarked on the exceptional skill of this team which we expect to have further success at the Munster Finals:
Gold medals presented to:- Lauren Cleary, Stephen Cleary, Daniel Lyons, A.J. Dunne, Aaron Dunne, Louise Lawlor.
Silver medals to Ss Peter and Pauls:- Ronan Coffey, Ellen Fahey, Aide Hickey, Alex Weadick O’Flaherty, Mark McSweeney, Chloe Crotty O’Grady, Holly O’Mahoney
The under 14 championships also featured teams from St Peter and Paul’s and Ballingarry in the final with the first game going to Ss Peter and Paul’s on a score of 214 – 189 points. Ballingarry rallied strongly in the second game which resulted in a victory of 198 – 173 points. With all to play for in a most exciting third match Ss Peter and Paul’s poached a lead of 40 points at one stage but Ballingarry rose to the challenge and were eventually only beaten by 8 points. Final score was 205 – 197 points. Gold medals presented to Cian Dalton, Grace Lee, Tommy Coffey, Chelsea Keane and Jessica Keane. Silver medals won by Aoibhe O’Shea, Patrick Burns, Conor Hayes, Patrick Walton, Ned Grogan.
In the under 16 final Ss Peter and Pauls proved far too strong for Silvermines and won both games by 377 – 121 points and 340 – 81 points. There were some of our seasoned players like Ben Walsh, Samantha O’Dwyer, Annie Coffey and Michael Keating on this team, all of whom are involved since the sport was introduced on the Community Games programme almost 5 years ago and have numerous medals to show for their efforts but full marks to Silvermines who make the journey to Clonmel every year without fail, they are a fine example of what participation is all about.
Gold medals presented to Anne Coffey, Samantha O’Dwyer, Lorraine Williams, Ben Walsh, Michael Keating and Niall Condon. (Rebecca Lyons was also on the panel)
Well done to Manager Mary Walsh and Sandra O’Dwyer who have been involved with these teams from day one and to everybody who helped in any way. Special thanks to the management committee of Hillview Sports Centre for the use of their excellent facilities.
