Golf for Africa

The club is running our fourth annual Golf for Africa charity this weekend the 26th and 27th October. This year the funds raised will go to the Presentation Sisters in Fethard for their Mission School in Zimbabwe. All prizes are donated, so please contact Dinny Burke, Pat Slattery and Brendan Kenny if you want to donate some prize you won or some unwanted gift you have. The competition is an 18 hole stableford singles and we will have men’s, ladies and a junior section.

Gents

There was some great score returned in last weekends open singles competition. Anthony Hayes (11) was the winner with a score of 39 points. Six players finished with 38 points with Kieran Burke Jnr (17) getting second place and Tom Leen (12) finishing third with Luke Bourke, John Creed and Eoin Barry just missing out on a prize. Brian Higgins (9) was the gross winner with 29pts. Con Lucey (24) was the winner of the weekly singles with 41 points. Thomas Morrissey (8) was second with 39 points and Dick Prendergast (10) was third with the same score. Denis Burke (4) won the gross prize.

Ladies

The Senior Ladies played their final competition of the year last week. Helen Clinton was in winning form and returned 24pts as did Marie Quirke who took second prize on a count back. Kathleen Shanley featured again just one point back on 23pts.

Sincere thanks to Joan Morrissey, Pauline Lucey and Kit O’Connor who organised a most successful Seniors season. We played our last 18 hole Sunday/Tuesday competition last weekend.

Winter weather is upon us so from now on we will play 14 or 12 hole competitions. The 2 ball scramble on Sun 13th and Tue 15th was very well supported and played in balmy Autumnal sunshine.

Lovely to see Norma O’Brien and Mary Butler on the winners’ list with 74.2 pts. Majella Smyth and Paula Gahan also returned the same score and were placed second on a count back. Ann Delahunty and Kathleen Shanley were a very close 3rd on 74.3 pts.

Golf for Africa is on next weekend. There is a special ladies section so your support would be greatly appreciated.

The Oct 14 hole monthly is ongoing. The Hamper competitions begin on Tue 29th and can be played throughout November. Best three cards to count. Further details on the notice board and by text.

Defibrillator
Former Ryder Cup winning Captain Bernard Gallacher cardiac arrested in August while playing at a corporate event in Aberdeen. Quick thinking staff used a defibrillator to revive him and he is now alive and well due to their intervention.

He is now spearheading a campaign to make defibrillators widely available on golf courses throughout Europe.

We bought a defibrillator a few months ago and last Saturday staff and some members attended an excellent training course in the Tirry Centre in Fethard given by Jimmy O’Sullivan and Liam Hayes. Those who took part were Louise Lalor, Heather Bailey, Marie Quirke, Nora Ryan, Ethna Cleary, Brian McNally, Gabor Kiss and Brendan Kenny. Their certificates are valid for two years.

We hope to run another training course during the winter to build up a core group of trained members in the use of this life saving equipment.

Junior Club

The Junior coaching is on Saturdays at 1.00pm. All juniors are welcome to attend and the coaching is by our professional Suzie O’Brien. New members are always welcome.

Seniors

We had a very successful outing to Thurles Golf Club recently. The team of Dave Forrest, Tony Lonergan and Michael W O’Mahoney were the winners with 86 points.

Please note that the seniors meet every Wednesday morning with a draw for partners at 9.30am and the competition starts at 10.00am sharp. All members over 55 and their friends are welcome.

Bridge & Whist

Noreen Woodlock & Kay Walsh were the winners of the North/South section and Rosemary Lalor & Brendan Kenny were the winners of the East/West section of last weeks bridge game. If you would like a game of bridge in a friendly atmosphere, why not come to our weekly game on Monday nights at 7.30pm. All are welcome and you do not need a partner; just come along.

Heather has started her Whist lessons on Wednesday nights, so if you want to learn how to play whist come along at 7.30pm.

Fairways Restaurant

The Fairways Restaurant at Slievenamon Golf Club is open for group bookings; menus and prices can be tailored to suit your needs. We cater for all occasions such as Birthdays, Parties, Funerals, Conferences and Weddings etc.

We have a special offer for new members to the club; this is €325 (including GUI & ILGU affiliation fees) for 2014. We also have a student membership for €130. Contact the club on 052 6132213.
