Cashel came out on the wrong side of a six try scoring spree from Cork Con on Saturday last at Templehill in the Munster Senior Seconds League, losing 40-3.
With almost a full team injured at the moment there is a ripple effect down the line through all the teams and it is a struggle to field teams for three competitions.
However the attitude and commitment of the 15 players who took the field cannot be questioned as they played their hearts out against a very strong and talented Cork Con side. Club Chairman Barry Maher rolled back the years and played on the wing and Coach James Hannigan played part of the second half when Cashel were down to 14 men. Both showed glimpses of the talent they had when they electrified the fields of Munster with their pace in their heyday. Club secretary Josephine Kelleher and Physio Davina Hanly looked worried when players went down injured as they feared they may be called into action. Con showed their class after 2 minutes when they ran through the Cashel defence to score a converted try. The Cashel pack settled into the game and more than held their own for the next 25 minutes with Andy Kelleher kicking a fine penalty to narrow the gap to 4 points. However Con capitalised on poor defending to add a further converted try before half time. Con scored four further tries in the second half but they were the result of poor tackling and the final score does not reflect the effort of the Cashel players. This team has had to travel to Cork for three games in a row and this has put pressure on playing resources. If the injury crises can be improved then this team is more than capable of competing with a number of home games to come. Training continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cashel: C O’Donnell, I Stanley, H Stanley, J Moynan, J McCarthy, K Gleeson, N Fitzgerald, F McSwiney, T Flynn, A Kelleher, B Maher, D Devane, J Ryan, D Davern, M Wallace, James Hannigan, P Ryan.
Cashel thirds played Waterpark in the Junior 2 League on Sunday and well beaten by a good Waterpark team. Kenny Drew and Richard Joyce scored a try each but it was not enough the rescue the situation.

Cashel First team had a free weekend and meet Garryowen at Spafield next Saturday in the Munster Senior Cup Quarter Final. It promises to be a great occasion and support would be welcome. It is wonderful to have some of Ireland’s top clubs playing in Cashel
