Holders Rockwell College bridged a 50 year gap in this year’s Avonmore Schools Senior Cup final at Thomond Park. Not since 1960/61 have the Tipperary outfit won a brace of Munster Senior cups but that record was surely breached at the home of Munster rugby with an historic victory that will long in the memory even if their supporters were left waiting anxiously for the final whistle.
Rockwell edged out Limerick side St Munchins 6-5 after a close and tense decider.
St Munchins led 5-0 at the interval following a try from Matthew Sweeney.
However the Tipperary side hit back with two Aidan Moynihan penalties and held out despite intense pressure from St Munchins.
Euphoria for the Tipperary outfit at the final whistle and for their coaches Mark Butler (Thurles) and assistant coaches Kevin Leamy (Dualla), Frank Fitzgerald (New Inn) and Tom Mulcahy (Midleton).
