After the heroics of the previous week in Rainey, Cashel hosted Seapoint last Saturday in the AIL Div 2A and there were great expectations of a good home performance.

Unfortunately Jonathan Ruru and Niall Fitzgerald were unable to play due to serious knee injuries while Cedric Unholtz made his debut for the club.

Cashel started well and were 3 points ahead with a penalty after 3 minutes. Seapoint hit back and a drop goal attempt was blocked by Sean Walsh who was leading his pack well. Cashel went on the offensive again but could not break down the Seapoint defence. After 15 minutes Howard Stanley who started at hooker was injured and replaced by his brother Ian. The game ebbed and flowed from end to end but both defences stood solid. However the Cashel tactic of playing through the forwards was not getting the desired result and many handling errors were evident.

Seapoint were more adept at running the ball. Indeed Cashel seem to have lost the ability to run the ball through the backs - a strength in former years. Then in the 32nd minute disaster struck when the Seapoint outhalf kicked to his winger who caught the ball and beat two Cashel defenders to score a try in the corner. Cashel continued to play but the intensity was not there and the handling errors continued. On the stroke of half time Cashel were awarded a penalty and Darragh O’Brien put them ahead with his second penalty.

Half Time score 6-5.

The second half commenced at a hectic pace with play going from end to end. Cashel failed to push the advantage when a Seapoint player went to the bin in the 50th minute.

Seapoint went 8-6 ahead in the 57th minute with a penalty. Then in the 60th minute came the turning point. Cashel were awarded a penalty on the half way line. However a Cashel player infringed and was sent to the bin. The penalty was reversed and Seapoint went on the attack and camped in the Cashel half. Eight minutes later Cashel lost Ian Stanley through injury and the game went to uncontested scrums.

Seapoint won a scrum on the 5 metre line and scored a try under the posts to go 15-6 ahead. Cashel again did not buckle but went on the attack. They swarmed into the Seapoint half and Ed Leamy scored a try to narrow the gap. They continued to attack and when they were awarded a penalty on the 22 in the last play of the game they still continued to attack but the ball was overturned, the referee blew the final whistle and Cashel’s meagre reward was once again a losing bonus point.

Seapoint were the hungrier team and their handling was better. They also won at the breakdown and Cashel turned over far too much ball with silly handling errors. Cashel have been ravaged by injuries and after 7 games, having won 3 and lost 4 and with 4 losing bonus points they find themselves in 8th position going into the Christmas break.

Cashel: J Maxwell, H Stanley, D Lambe, A Devitt, S Walsh, J Moynan, J E O’Connor, E Leamy, D McGrath, A Kelleher, K Leamy, C Unholtz, B Silke, D O’Brien, P O’Connor, H Stanley, I Stanley, M Cross, M Hickey, A Wallace.
