Fine win for Kilfeacle RFC under 16s

Kilfeacle U16s had a huge win last Sunday in the semi final of the East Munster League.

Against all odds they turned over last season’s winners Waterpark with a stellar team performance. They went down 42-5 in the season opener against Waterpark in Kilfeacle so nobody gave them much of a chance this time round.
The opening 10 minutes was hectic and Waterpark soon knew this was a different side to the one they beat in September. Kilfeacle laid siege to the Waterpark line after 15 minutes with Captain Luke Ashmore and Mikie Lonergan going very close on a few occasions but then Waterpark were given a penalty to relieve the pressure and they managed to get into the Kilfeacle half where they were awarded another penalty which they kicked and missed. After 25 mins Kilfeacle were awarded a penalty of their own which Josh Ryan cooly kicked over from 40m.

The second half started well for the visitors with Davy Byron moving to scrum half and after Number 8 Rian Doody picked from the scrum inside their 22 he and Davy exchanged passes to unlock the defence and send Rian over to extend our lead to 8pts and then Josh nailed the conversion to make it 10-0.

Waterpark were shell shocked but responded as champions do and scored 14pts without reply. Kilfeacle were being asked serious questions 14-10 down after dominating the game and only 10 minutes on the clock. With 7 minutes left Kilfeacle were awarded a penalty on the 22 which they decided to run, Mikie Lonergan took it up and set it up 10m out then Luke Ashmore gained another 5m before Edmund Burke threw a lovely pass to Davy Byron who took it over the line with ease to put us on top again before Josh Ryan converted to leave it 17-14.

There were a few nervy moments but when Tony Burns gathered a kick inside his 22 and ran it to midfield and over the sideline the full time whistle was blown much to the relief of the Kilfeacle players and utter devastation of the Waterpark lads. This was a huge win and every player played their part from the hooking of Gavin McCormack and tenacity of Sean Savage, Lorcan O’Donavan, Rory Brown, James Moloney and Jack Ryan. The back row of Brendan McGrath, Rian Doody and Brian O’Connor were on fire and supported the play all day to secure ball. Edmund Burke was superb at scrum half and supplied a very skillful and determined back line of Josh Ryan, Davy Byron, Shane Farrell, Tomas O Muracu, Maurice O’Sullivan and Tony Burns. We would also like to wish speedy recoveries to Pa Meehan, Daire Egan and Tristan Martin who hopefully will all be fit for the Final.
We now await the winner of Dungarvan and Fethard in the Final with time and venue TBC. We have also qualified for the Pan Munster league after Christmas which is a huge achievement as ourselves and Fethard are the only Tipp teams to qualify. Training continues at 6.50pm Friday night on the Hill.

On Saturday Kilfeacle and District RFC seconds welcomed Clanwilliam RFC seconds to Morrissey Park in the Gleeson League. The game was a close affair which on another day Clanwilliam, who are showing steady signs of improvement, might have won, however on this day Kilfeacle shaded it and deserved their 26-9 win. Kilfeacle were happy with the performance in a lively game.

Mini rugby training continues in Kilfeacle on Friday nights at 7.00pm. This is an ideal environment to introduce both boys and girls to the game in a safe and controlled manner. Kilfeacle welcomes boys and girls from 6 years and up to join us for the remainder of the season. We have great fun up on The Hill and have lots of matches planned against some great clubs over the next few months. Mini rugby is a perfect game for beginners as boys and girls play against children of their own ability and age. See you there!
