Rockwell College were last week named as Munster Rugby School of the year at the annual Munster Rugby awards at Thomond Park in Limerick city. The Cashel based school picked up the award for winning this year’s Munster Schools Senior Cup after their superb 9-3 victory over Presentation Brothers College from Cork on Saint Patrick’s Day.

Rockwell’s previous success in the competition came in 2001 and they had lost the 2009 and 2010 finals. Rockwell were represented on the night by Mr Pat O’Sullivan (Principal), Mr Tony Smith (Games Master) and Mr Tom Mulcahy (Asst Coach). Offering his congratulations to all award winners which also included Cashel RFC “across the spectrum of Munster rugby — from senior to junior to clubs and schools”, Irish Examiner sports editor Tony Leen said: “Organic growth has always been a Munster strength, and it has become even more important against a backdrop of a challenging economic environment and in the face of European rivals with deeper pockets. All associated with Munster Rugby are keenly aware of the necessity of a home-grown production line.”
