After a break in league action last weekend for our senior teams, Clonmel RFC 1st XV travelled to Limerick on Sunday last for the eagerly awaited clash with unbeaten St.Mary’s.
In extremely wet and testing conditions both teams lined out in front of a strong and vocal home crowd. Early points came to Clonmel after a St.Mary’s infringement and Conor Cooney slotted over a penalty to take a 3 point lead. St.Mary’s levelled the score five minutes before half time to go into the break 3-3. However those initial three points early in the first half were to be the only Clonmel points of the day and St.Marys dominated much of the possession and racked up an additional 15 points in the second half, during the high octane encounter. The game finished with a 21-3 home win to St.Mary’s. The loss for Clonmel, the second in the campaign to date, sees the Clonmel side drop to fourth position on the table behind Newcastle West, Kanturk and St.Marys. The league takes a break over Christmas and Clonmel will host Mallow on January 19th.
Munster Junior 2 League
Our 2nd XV travelled to Waterpark on Sunday as they continued their Junior 2 league campaign. Waterpark took an early lead through a well worked try, however Clonmel replied with a penalty from Christopher Brown. Half way through the first half Clonmel began to get a grip on the game and a Conor Tobin try gave them a lead they would never relinquish. Christopher Brown added the extra points to make it 12-5. Some good work from the forwards saw them drive over from a lineout with Ed Flannery touching down to leave it 17-5 at half time. Clonmel conceded a try early in the second half to make it 17-10 but two penalties by Chris Brown steadied the ship at 23-10. James Keohoe got Clonmel’s third try and last score before Waterpark went over with 2 minutes to play. In the end Clonmel had a 28-15 victory and a great win their group section.
