Rockwell College outhalf Aidan Moynihan (16) was honoured with the ‘Cork Young Sports Star of the Month Award’ for March by the Cork City and County Youth Sports Awards in recognition of him winning a Senior Cup medal with the County Tipperary on March 19. The West Corkman played outhalf in Rockwell’s memorable 6-5 victory over Saint Munchin’s College at Thomond Park when he scored all Rockwell’s six points.
A talented sports man, Moynihan plays GAA for his home club of Canovee and he is also a Cork minor footballer playing in Cork’s recent 16 point victory over Limerick. Interestingly Aidan will play against Rockwell colleagues James Feehan (Killenaule), Philip Quirke (Moyle Rovers), Colman Kennedy (Clonmel Commercials), Greg Henry (Killenaule), TJ Ryan (Rockwell rovers) and Tommy Sweeney (Ballyporeen) when Cork take on Tipperary in the Munster Minor football semi-final at Pairce Chaoimh on May 16 next.
Speaking at the ceremony in the Gresham Metropole Hotel, Rockwell team manager and fellow West Corkman Tony Smith told the gathering that Aidan “made his senior cup debut with Rockwell against Glenstal in the Limerick City Cup final last October and is the first Rockwell TY student to play outhalf for the Rockwell Senior Cup team”.
He added that after “his performances for Rockwell this year he was selected for the Munster Schools Under 18 squad for next September’s Interpros. His contribution to Rockwell’s success this year has been immense as he scored 10 points in the quarter final victory over Castletroy, six points in the semi-final victory over Christians and scored all Rockwell’s six points in the final”.
On behalf of the team management, Mr Smith wished Aidan who is underage for senior Cup rugby for two more years all the best for the future and congratulated him and his parents Kevin and Liz and his siblings on the honour bestowed on him. The award is jointly sponsored by John Buckley Sports and the Metropole Hotel in Cork City.
