FAI Junior Cup 3rd Round

Cashel Town FC 9

Ballyneale FC 0

It’s hard to report on a game with a scoreline like this without making the reader wonder was one side particularly good, or the other side utterly woeful.

The truth however, often lies somewhere in the middle. And so it was with this game on Sunday last.

The first team have made a habit recently of losing in cup competition to lower league opposition, so a good start was always going to be vital in setting the tempo for this game. And, a good start was what they got.

Barely five minutes were on the clock, when David Slattery opened the scoring with a rasping effort after some neat interchanges amongst the Cashel midfield. And then, before the Ballyneale lads had a chance to compose themselves, Shane Murphy and Shane Stapleton had extended the Cashel lead to three within the first fifteen minutes.

Shell shocked they tried to attack, but to little avail, as every half chance the manufactured was snuffed out by the Cashel defence and young goalkeeper Gearoid Slattery. And just as they thought they might make it to half time and compose themselves, they were hit twice more in the last five minutes of the half by a second from Murphy and a goal from Cashel’s top scorer this year Daniel Doherty.

Totally demoralised, the second half turned into a procession and was barely ten minutes old when Doherty hit his second, and then followed it up within five minutes from the penalty spot to record his second hat trick of the season, to make it seven nil to the home team.

Late goals from Shane Stapleton and Ian Hahessy made it nine, and only a world class save from the Ballyneale keeper denied Cashel player coach Paul Ryan from recording double figures on the day.

Facile as this victory may have been, it now leaves the club only one game away from a coveted spot in the last 64 draw of the FAI Cup, where the cream of Junior soccer all over Ireland awaits.

The club have not made it out of the area from many years now, and it is long overdue. So here’s hoping for a good draw and another performance like this.

TSDL Division 3

Cashel Town B FC 4

Donohill and District FC 2

The B team continued their rehabilitation in the Third Division after a slow start, with a well earned win against a strong Donohill team on Sunday morning at Palmershill.

The win steadies the ship somewhat for the team, who will now be looking at the possibility of a speedy return to the second Division next Spring.
