Carrick United beat Hibernians 2-1 in the FAI Junior Cup at the weekend.

A hard fought typical cup tie that had the onlookers fully focused until the full time whistle, the home side struggled to get their game together in an opening half of few goal scoring opportunities.

Anthony Power and Gerry Walsh had the best efforts on goal during a tense opening spell. A good Hibernians side took a shock lead just on half time meaning that the home side really had to improve to stay in the competition.

The opening stages of the second half were enthralling as the home side upped their efforts, Hibernians defended in numbers and always looked capable of scoring again on the break. The equaliser came after a number of near misses 15 minutes into the half. Ian Cleary’s close in shot saw John James step over the ball wrong footing the net minder. Carrick pressed hard after this but were guilty of not being ruthless in front of goal. A number of astonishing goal mouth scrambles and goal line clearances maintained the visitors’ parity.

Just as all were getting set for extra time another crowded penalty pin ball session ended in Alan Coady shooting the winning goal. Enthralling stuff, St Saviours visit in the next round as hard draws continue. Next Saturday evening the boys travel to Piltown in the Munster Junior Cup.
