Late goal earns a point for Donohill

A long-range direct free kick by Michael O’Neill four minutes from time saw Donohill & District salvage a share of the spoils in this League Division 3 clash against Redmondstown in Clonmel last Sunday.

Redmondstown who are just six points behind the leaders with games in hand were hoping to close the gap. The home side had the majority of the possession and came close through Brendan Boland and Andy Fitzpatrick early on. The Redmondstown relentless pressure eventually paid off on 37 minutes when Kevin Dempsey headed an in-swinging corner-kick from Brendan Boland home.

Although Donohill were beginning to enjoy more of the ball after the changeover it was looking like Redmondstown were going to hang on. With the clock against them Donohill & District were awarded a direct free-kick 35 yards from the Redmondstown goal with just four minutes left. From the resultant set-piece Michael O’Neill’s beautiful struck shot proved unstoppable and nestled in the top corner of the net to restore parity. Redmondstown almost snatched it right at the death when the Donohill keeper produced a great reflex save to deny Darren Murphy.

The outcome from this draw sees Redmondstown move onto 10 points with 8 games left. Donohill & District are now on 8 points with 7 games left.
