‘Reds’ into cup final
Redmondstown booked their place in the final of the Peter O’Reilly Cup after overcoming the challenge of fellow Third Division side Donohill & District in an eight-goal fest in Donohill last Sunday.
Redmondstown were well on top against last season’s finalists Donohill & District opening up a 3-0 half-time lead. Goals came from Willie Kelly after 5 and 30 minutes respectively and from Brendan Boland on 40 minutes.
After the changeover, John McGrath reduced the leeway for Donohill scoring in the 50th minute. However, Redmondstown regained the upper hand and made it 4-1 through Geno Lonergan on 65 minutes. Kieran Hanley pulled another goal back for Donohill on 70 minutes only for his namesake Barry Hanley to make it 5-2 to Redmondstown on 75 minutes. Donohill had the final say with a Jimmy Crosse goal on 89 minutes, but it was not enough to stop Redmondstown going through.
Ballypatrick through to decider
Third Division Ballypatrick booked their place in the final of the Peter O’Reilly Cup after overcoming the gallant challenge of Fourth Division Ballyneale at wet and windswept Ballydine last Sunday.
Surprise packet Ballyneale, who have shown a vast improvement this season enjoyed the majority of the possession in the opening half coming close to breaking the deadlock. In fact, Ballyneale had the ball in the net just before the break, but it was disallowed for an earlier infringement.
Ballypatrick came out for the second half with all guns blazing and broke the deadlock albeit against the run of play after 48 minutes. From a Ballyneale corner-kick Ballypatrick broke quickly and finished it through Stephen O’Reilly. Things went from bad to worse for Ballyneale on 50 minutes when they gave away a penalty. From the spot-kick Barry Kiely made no mistake to put the visitors 2-0 in front. With conditions underfoot get worse Ballyneale struggled to regain the initiative as Ballypatrick held on to secure their place in this season’s Peter O’Reilly Cup Final.
