FAI Junior Cup 5th Round
CLONMEL TOWN 2
MOYNE RANGERS (WEXFORD) 0
Clonmel Town qualified for the last 32 of the FAI Junior Cup after getting the better of Wexford Premier League side Moyne Rangers from Enniscorthy at the Dr. Pat O’Callaghan Complex, Clonmel last Sunday.
Clonmel Town were not at full strength with several players unavailable due to injury and suspensions, but despite this took the game to the visitors from the kick-off. Paul Horan and Levi Whelan went close in the opening five minutes for the hosts. Moyne Rangers were a young, energetic team who played good football throughout the ninety minutes.
However, Clonmel Town were the stronger side in the first half and took a deserved lead in the 20th minute when David McGrath bundled the ball home from close range. Clonmel Town went on to dominate the remainder of the half and in the 35th minute, Shane Flynn made it 2-0 after great work from Barry Ryan.
Moyne Rangers had a lot of the possession in the second half but did not trouble a well-organised Clonmel Town defence. Town’s net-minder Evan Comerford, a mere spectator for long periods, pulled off a good save on the hour from a long distance shot. In truth, it was the only time that the Clonmel Town goal was troubled. Barry Ryan and Paul Shanahan went close in the final quarter for a Clonmel Town side that finished the game in the ascendency and look forward to the New Year with that place in the last 32 secured. Clonmel Town will travel to Limerick to face the current Premier side Carew Park conquers of Fairview Rangers in the last round.
